What is a good basis for resciding a sale of a house?
I bought a house for very cheap. After moving in I found out from the neighbors that this house is widely reputed to be possessed by ghosts or something. Which the prior residents of the house had reportedly seen. In fact, the house is listed in a national guide to haunted houses. Now I get scared at everything that makes a noise. Do I have a good basis for rescinding the sale? what should I do?
It's not advised for sellers to disclose a haunting for a number of reasons, like scaring every potential buyer away. Plus there's no way to prove that, strange events could be accounted for a number of things. Say for instance "flickering lights", could be an electrical issue. Hauntings unfortunately are very difficult to prove - obviously lol. So as long as the sellers disclosed something in regard to strange happenings IF any were in fact happening when they lived there, you can't void your contract..
Now if you asked the seller if there was any reason to believe there was a ghost or if they felt the house was haunted, yes they would have to answer honestly. But assuming you never asked, there is no reason for them to offer a possibility of a haunting based on their opinions, opinions are rarely deal breakers in documents, just need the facts... If it's built over an old cemetery or sacred Indian grounds of some sort, yes by law that has to be disclosed...
Why did you buy it if you knew it was listed as haunted on a national guide anyway? Or did you learn that later? Either way, research next time!
Good luck... Try to get past the noises, odds are it's nothing, it's your home, you deserve to be comfortable there.
